Blog Tour: The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You by Lily Anderson

Between The Lines is a sporadic feature on Pop! Goes The Reader in which authors and other industry professionals provide further insight into the writing and publishing process in the form of interviews, guest posts, etc. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy as we read between the lines.

Hi everyone! Today, I have the immense pleasure of hosting the latest stop on the blog tour for Lily Anderson’s 2016 novel, The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You. Now available in a library and bookstore near you, The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You is a contemporary romp filled to the brim with pop and nerd culture references sure to satisfy the inner Doctor Who and Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan in all of us. For my stop on the tour I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to ask Lily one question about her fun, original, gloriously geeky debut and I can only hope you’ll enjoy the result!

Given that The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You is loosely inspired by Much Ado About Nothing, if you could be any one character from one of Shakespeare’s creations, which would you choose and why?

Oh my goodness, there are so many amazing characters in Shakespeare’s canon, but it’s really hard to find one who doesn’t end up dying spectacularly! Really, I’ve always loved A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was the first Shakespeare play I ever saw live. I’d love to be Titania, queen of the fairies. I think I’d do very well as the ruler of the Fae. I would definitely look awesome with wings. And I would 100% divorce Oberon because he’s a gigantic douchecanoe. Girl had a good thing going with Bottom and let her pride get in the way. (Yes, I know it was a magic spell and he was literally a donkey at the time but Oberon was a jackass to her for centuries, plus he’s immortal so they’ll never be free of each other.)

Trixie Watson has two very important goals for senior year: to finally save enough to buy the set of Doctor Who figurines at the local comic books store, and to place third in her class and knock Ben West — and his horrendous new mustache that he spent all summer growing — down to number four.

Trixie will do anything to get her name ranked over Ben’s, including give up sleep and comic books—well, maybe not comic books—but definitely sleep. After all, the war of Watson v. West is as vicious as the Doctor v. Daleks and Browncoats v. Alliance combined, and it goes all the way back to the infamous monkey bars incident in the first grade. Over a decade later, it’s time to declare a champion once and for all.

The war is Trixie’s for the winning, until her best friend starts dating Ben’s best friend and the two are unceremoniously dumped together and told to play nice. Finding common ground is odious and tooth-pullingly-painful, but Trixie and Ben’s cautious truce slowly transforms into a fandom-based tentative friendship. When Trixie’s best friend gets expelled for cheating and Trixie cries foul play, however, they have to choose who to believe and which side they’re on—and they might not pick the same side.
