Simon vs. The Week-Long Celebration: The Literary Shopaholic

Hello and welcome to the fourth post in a week-long series dedicated to a celebration of Becky Albertalli’s forthcoming 2015 debut, Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda! Today I’ve decided to use one of my regular blog features, The Literary Shopaholic, as my inspiration to create a shopping guide inspired by Simon’s rather particular tastes. As anyone who has read the novel will tell you, sweets – and, in particular, Oreos – play a very large role in Simon’s life. Here are just a handful of items I like to imagine an Oreoholic™ like Simon might appreciate.

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out — without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

The Literary Shopaholic is a sporadic feature on Pop! Goes The Reader in which I highlight some of my favourite literary-themed items. From bookmarks to bookends, purses to prints and everything in between, I’ve selected a few things that will be at the very top of my shopping list this season!
