‘Tis The Season: Authors Talk Holidays 2016 With Siobhan Vivian

‘Tis The Season: Authors Talk Holidays is a special seasonal feature on Pop! Goes The Reader in which some of my favourite authors help me to celebrate the spirit of the season and spread a little holiday cheer. So, pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate and snuggle in by the fireside as they answer the question: “What does the holiday season mean to you?” You can find a complete list of the participants and their scheduled guest post dates Here!

Growing up, my family had but one holiday tradition.

On Christmas morning, we always woke up to the smell of plastic.

The scent was so intense, it completely eclipsed the piney-ness of our Christmas tree, the cranberry cinnamon candles my mom loved to burn, the holiday cookies we’d baked the night before. And instead of racing downstairs to see the pile of presents under the tree, my sister and I jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom between our bedrooms.

Sometime during the night, “Santa” had entered our house and hung up a brand new novelty shower curtain.

I’m sure this sounds lame, but I can’t overstate how PSYCHED we were to see our new shower curtain. They were usually Disney ones, brightly colored paint on clear plastic, almost like an oversized animation cell. A huge Little Mermaid with the sea splashing behind her. Cinderella and her prince smiling from inside their carriage, her castle twinkling in the distance.

My friends’ families had more traditional holiday traditions. Parties on Christmas Eve. Midnight Mass. Dinners at Grandma’s House.

We always got a new shower curtain. And it was the best.

It’s not actually the end of the world…but it sure does feel that way to Keeley.

What if your town was sliding underwater and everyone was ordered to pack up and leave? How would you and your friends spend your last days together? While the adults plan for the future, box up their possessions and find new places to live, Keeley Hewitt and her friends decide to go out with a bang. There are parties in abandoned houses. Canoe races down Main Street. The goal is to make the most of every minute they still have together. And for Keeley, that means taking one last shot at the boy she’s loved forever.
