Top Ten Books I Want To Read By Next Halloween

“Top Ten Tuesday” is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish!

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is the Top Ten Books I Want To Read By Next Halloween.

I must admit that this week’s Top Ten Tuesday question(s) posed a bit of a challenge for me. The choices were either “Scariest Looking Book Covers”, which I think I covered in yesterday’s edition of Do! Judge A Book By Its Cover or “Best Books To Read For Halloween”, which I don’t feel qualified to do as I’m relatively unfamiliar with the literary horror market. So, with that in mind, I decided to do my own twist on this week’s topic! Rather than recommend the perfect Halloween-themed books to others, I’ve decided to make a list of the Top Ten Books I Want To Read By Next Halloween!

As always, these choices are listed in no particular order.

1) Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

2) Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

3) The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls by Claire Legrand

4) The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd

5) The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

6) Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter

7) Paper Valentine by Brenna Yovanoff

8) The Year of Shadows by Claire Legrand

9) The Diviners by Libba Bray

10) Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

  1. These are great spooky choices, Jen! I can vouch for Vampire Academy and Coldest Girl. And agreed that Unspoken and the Cavendish Home look intriguing. Your covers are so pleasing to the eye and colorful too. Thanks for not scaring me with spooky covers! I’m already traumatized from other covers I’ve seen tonight 🙂

  2. A large part of why I read Unspoken was because of the beautiful cover. I love gothic-y looking covers with silhouettes. I have so much feelings for all the characters. I really hope you enjoy it!

I am just itching to read The Diviners! The size of the book is quite intimidating, but the book is set in my favorite time period, and everything in the plot speaks to me.

  3. I love the Alice cover but from what I’ve heard people tend to either love it or hate it. I actually did half scary (bad) and half scary (creepy) covers for my post. There is a lot of good fodder out there for your Do! Judge a Book by its cover – I spent hours trying to whittle down the options.

  4. Ok I think we should read VA series together! I’ve read book 1 (which was good but not AMAZING like everyone has said — though everyone said the series just gets better). I started Unspoken but never finished it but the original cover you have there is SO BEAUTIFUL and I display it in my living room. I really liked The Madman’s Daughter but I’ve been hearing unfavorable things about book 2 so I’m bummed about that but WE WILL SEE. I also need to read Mrs. Peregrine’s — that cover freaks me right out though!

  5. ooh, Jen! There are SO many wonderful books on this list!

I recently bought VA. I’m not a huge fan of vampires, but this one seems super fluffy and fun.

UNSPOKEN is great and the side stories were fun too! The book ended with a massive cliffhanger – halfway through the character speaking if I’m remembering correctly! – but I haven’t found the time to read the sequel yet.

CAVENDISH & YEAR OF SHADOWS are both absolutely wonderful. Claire is one of my auto-buy authors for a reason. 🙂

MADMAN’S DAUGHTER was creepy and gothic and did justice to the original story. I have the sequel but haven’t read it yet. Looking forward to it though!

THE COLDEST GIRL IN COLDTOWN left me disappointed. Again, vampires. Black’s take on them was really fascinating though, but there was just something about it that didn’t work for me. But I seem to be in the minority. I’m interested in trying Black’s other books & seeing how they compare.

DIVINERS absolutely floored me. So haunting and delicious. I’ve converted multiple coworkers into fans and cannot wait for the sequel!

Hi! I’m Jen! I’m a thirty-something introvert who loves nothing more than the cozy comfort of home and snuggling my two rescue cats, Pepper and Pancakes. I also enjoy running, jigsaw puzzles, baking and everything Disney. Few things bring me more joy than helping a reader find the right book for them!
