Top Ten Books On My Winter To-Be-Read List

“Top Ten Tuesday” is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish!

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is the Top Ten Books On My Winter To-Be-Read List.

Why do I do this to myself? You would think I would have learned better by now. If experience has taught me anything, it’s that creating this list of books I ‘have to’ read in the upcoming season is little apart from a jinx. If anything, it seems to be some strange psychological deterrent. Of the ten books I listed on my fall to-be-read list, I read only two. Yes, I said two. Sometimes it feels as though I’m doing nothing but setting myself up for failure. That said, ever the optimist, I’ve decided to give this yet another try. These are just a few of the books I would like to make a priority this winter. Here goes nothing!

As always, these choices are listed in no particular order.

1) Violins Of Autumn by Amy McAuley

2) The Divorce Papers by Susan Rieger

3) Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler

4) The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler

5) These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

6) The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson

7) The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten

8) Mrs. Queen Takes The Train by William Kuhn

9) Not A Drop To Drink by Mindy McGinnis

10) Where The Stars Still Shine by Trish Doller

    1. I’m spectacularly awful at sticking to these sort of lists! I don’t know if it’s the expectation or pressure, but I can never seem to read more than one or two books from any of my seasonal reading lists. They’re so much fun to put together, though! 😆

I’m actually a little ashamed about my inclusion of Where The Stars Still Shine, if only because I was so looking forward to its release and had every intention of reading it immediately. But you know what they say about the best laid plans! 😛 Hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to do a little reading over my Christmas break! It seems to be almost universally beloved.

    1. Having to wait to read These Broken Stars feels a little like torture! My family and I always agree not to buy ourselves anything after a certain point in December in anticipation of Christmas, so I’ll have to wait until after December 25th when I’ll (hopefully) receive it as a gift to read it. Christmas can’t get here soon enough! 😆

Admittedly I know very little about the life of Zelda Fitzgerald, but what I have heard fascinates me. Perhaps I should begin by reading a biography of her life to give me a little context, but I’m so excited to read Therese Anne Fowler’s novel as I’ve heard little but universal praise for it 🙂

  1. Oh I absolutely adored The Book of Broken Hearts so I really hope that you get the chance to read that book this Winter. I’ve also heard some pretty amazing things about Where the Stars Still Shine and Not a Drop to Drink! Happy reading, I hope you get a lot more of these books ticked off your list this time around 🙂

  2. I wasn’t going to read Not a Drop to Drink because honestly, it didn’t interest me that much. But the hype monster has eaten my brain and now I can’t resist. I hope it’s as amazing as everyone says it is.

I seriously CANNOT WAIT for These Broken Stars. It’s in the mail to me, but of course I have to wait until Christmas to even LOOK AT IT. My husband is mean! How will I deal with it being in my house?

    1. I love survival stories in general so I was interested in Not A Drop To Drink from the outset, but Jamie’s glowing review only made me more excited to read it. I only hope the hype hasn’t been overblown and I’m disappointed!

I’m in the exact same boat, Bekka! I asked for These Broken Stars for Christmas and I know my mom will have purchased it for me. Having to wait until after December 25th to read it seems like cruel and unusual punishment 🙁

  3. I am the same exact way about making lists and then not reading the books I put on them! I don’t know how many I read off my Fall TBR but I’m sure it wasn’t many. 😛

I am reading These Broken Stars right now, although I’m only 30 or so pages into it so can’t form much of an opinion as of yet. I enjoyed Where the Stars Still Shine quite a lot!

  4. Ha! I feel exactly like you do about these lists! I made one for “series to start” last year and I still have to read any book on it… yikes!
Anyhow, that is such a great list! These Broken Stars is already receiving many great reviews and The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B sounds so good. Good luck on your list!

  5. The Divorce Papers sounds really intriguing and I love the premise of it. I have to grab a Sarah Ockler novel too this winter since I haven’t read her stuff in the longest time. Where the Stars Still Shine has such a holiday-themed cover and I think it’s perfect for the holidays! Personally, I want to get through The Paris Wife, The Cuckoo’s Calling and some other books this winter. Here’s to hoping!

  6. I just read The Book of Broken Hearts! It was really good, and kept me reading until 3AM. I loved the way it tackled the dynamics between Jude and her dad, and loved seeing her with her sisters and with Emilio Vargas.

The family dynamic is also great in Where the Stars Still Shine, which was lovely. I enjoyed seeing Trish’s descriptions of the setting and of Callie’s (new) large Greek family.

I also enjoyed These Broken Stars! It was written so beautifully, and I really loved Tarver.

    Happy reading!

  7. None of these made my official TTT list, but I also want to read Z and These Broken Stars soon! I own both, too, so I really have no excuse. I adore the cover for Mrs. Queen takes the train. I always pick it up when I’m just browsing in the bookstore. The only two I’ve read at Where the Stars Still Shine and The Book of Broken Hearts. Hope you enjoy!
