Sixteen-year-old physics nerd Aysel is obsessed with plotting her own death. With a mother who can barely look at her without wincing, classmates who whisper behind her back, and a father whose violent crime rocked her small town, Aysel is ready to turn her potential energy into nothingness.

There’s only one problem: she’s not sure she has the courage to do it alone. But once she discovers a website with a section called Suicide Partners, Aysel’s convinced she’s found her solution: a teen boy with the username FrozenRobot (aka Roman) who’s haunted by a family tragedy is looking for a partner.

Even though Aysel and Roman have nothing in common, they slowly start to fill in each other’s broken lives. But as their suicide pact becomes more concrete, Aysel begins to question whether she really wants to go through with it. Ultimately, she must choose between wanting to die or trying to convince Roman to live so they can discover the potential of their energy together. Except that Roman may not be so easy to convince.

I think I’m going to begin to hold Harper Collins Canada personally responsible for each book they add to my to-be-read list in 2015. That said, as worried as I am about already having 40+ books on my 2015 to-be-read list, I can’t stay mad at anyone who publishes thoughtful and important stories like this one. Like The Last Time We Say Goodbye before it, My Heart and Other Black Holes was another book that was presented to bloggers at the recent 2014 HCC Frenzy event and, having previously heard of it and added it to Goodreads, I was eager to learn a little more about it. Aside from having one of the best titles of the upcoming season (or, well, ever) My Heart And Other Black Holes was described as a powerful, emotionally resonant narrative that avoids being condescending or sanctimonious in tone. As we all know by now, there’s nothing I adore more than a standalone, realistic contemporary novel and, with a moving premise that promises to address important issues like depression, mental illness and suicide in a sensitive and insightful manner, Jasmine Warga has created one overwhelmingly excited prospective reader in this book blogger! Now the only question that remains is: How long will I be able to continue to resist its allure before throwing caution (and my review schedule) to the wind?

Hi! I’m Jen! I’m a thirty-something introvert who loves nothing more than the cozy comfort of home and snuggling my two rescue cats, Pepper and Pancakes. I also enjoy running, jigsaw puzzles, baking and everything Disney. Few things bring me more joy than helping a reader find the right book for them!
